How To Find A Local Nanny or Babysitter When Traveling // Plus Safety Tips!

How We Found a Babysitter in Beaver Creek Last Minute

Last weekend Marcello and I were able to find a last minute babysitter locally in Beaver Creek, Colorado so we could hit the slopes together. We put up a post on care.com and asked around in town at the restaurants, shops, and hotel concierge. The babysitter we found was amazing and for us, it felt great to spend time together as a couple and finally hit the slopes after an almost 2 year pause!

Here are some places to search for your babysitter when traveling:

- ask the locals (restaurants, shops, coffee shops, etc.)

- check in with your hotel concierge (You can also check in with the larger hotels in town, as they often have readily available resources. We checked with the Park Hyatt and they had a full sheet of references for us to take with us.)

- submit a post on care.com

- do a google search for local nanny services

Some safety tips:

- call references

- read reviews (if using care.com, a local nanny service, etc.)

- meet in a public place for a quick in-person coffee interview ahead of time

- make sure they are CPR certified

- have your hotel front desk check their I.D. upon arrival (this is also helpful so that the hotel staff meets the nanny as well)

- if you don’t want them to leave the hotel let the hotel staff know

- check in throughout the day

- pack your nursery camera to use in your hotel room

- check their social media accounts

- ask them to sign up for GPS tracking (Marcello & I use Life360 with each other, and actually haven't used it with a nanny. It's a great option if you're looking for the reassurance.)

- trust your gut!

We ended up finding our babysitter through our server at the restaurant we were dining at for lunch. His roommate happened to be a nanny, but she already had something else scheduled for the time we needed her. However, she was nice enough to ask her friends. And eventually that lead to a friend of a friend who we ended up using. We also got several leads from our care.com post, which was nice for us to have options.

The Vail Valley is one of our favorite spots for a weekend getaway, so it's great to create a network of people for babysitting. I highly recommend trying this out for yourself if you also have out of town places you frequent; because (1) it's great to have options (2) it's reassuring working with the same person each time, or working with a network you trust and (3) taking time for yourself and your partnership is good for the whole family!
